Hence the need for an email marketing software that best suits your needs.

These two tools are pretty new in the market compared to the oldies like Aweber, GetResponse, MailChimp, or ActiveCampaign. Moosend was found in 2011 while ConvertKit was born in 2015.

Moosend prides itself in the Maverick Spirit and ‘sending good-looking emails that drive big results.’

ConvertKit, on the other hand, says it all in their tag-line, ‘the power of Infusionsoft but easier to use than MailChimp. You can refer to my ConvertKit review also.

Sounds intense, right?

Don’t worry, I fired up Moosend and ConvertKit to get an in-depth review.

Moosend vs ConvertKit

Interface

Moosend with a simple and easy to navigate interface. With a single look, you can see all the features you need to start a campaign.

However, you might find it a bit crowded and miss some features but don’t worry, they’ve got a wizard holding your hand.

Don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to have a cluttered mess in your hands. It’s a very clear and uncluttered interface with a step-by-step onboarding process. I liked it.

Moosend interface

With ConvertKit, you have another platform that swims in the simplicity pool. Navigation is pretty much straight forward giving users an excellent experience.

ConvertKit dashboard

It’s an intuitive UI from the get-go. If you’ve used tools like Drip you can relate. The pages load fast which is a surprise as it beats the clunky and slow loading ActiveCampaign pages.

Winner: ConvertKit. Both platforms have easy to use and navigate interfaces. But ConvertKit’s UI is fluid with no glitches at all. What’s not to like?

List management

Personalization on Moosend helps you build a deeper relationship with your contacts.

Uploading contacts is easy and you can do it in different ways. CSV, Excel file, copy-paste, Salesforce, and using the Google contacts plugin.

Moosend list management

Now to the cool stuff.

You can segment your contacts based on their location, behavior on your site, repeated purchases, weather conditions. Cool, right?

Custom fields come in hand to help you better segment your audience and create as many lists as you need.

And the cherry on the cake, Moosend has a real-time website event tracking feature. It tracks the events on your site and helps you segment your contacts into different lists based on their web activity. This way, you send hyper-targeted emails increasing the lifetime value of your contacts.

Oh! There is also a Moosend WordPress Plugin that syncs all your WordPress signup forms with different lists.

ConvertKit has an out of this world tag-based system to help in list management.

First adding your contacts is a breeze but you’ve got only three ways to do it unlike on Moosend.

Importing subscribers

After that, you can create segments and add different tags to your audience.

Segmentation allows you to categorize your subscribers into different groups. You have filters to help you achieve that. But it’s not as personalized as the tags.

creating segments

And they’ve gone beyond and created a ConvertKit WordPress Plugin that will let you track every action taken by your audience on your website. And apply behavior-based tags.

If you got no WordPress site for whatever reason, Sorry! You won’t be able to track website behavior. Well, for now.

Winner: Tie. they both give you an AI list management experience. You can create hyper-targeted emails with both as they segment your audience based on their behavior.

Email broadcasts and templates

Moosend gives you a wide array of 40+ templates to choose from. Or create from scratch if you want to.

And when it comes to their drag and drop editor, you have customization flexibility, device responsiveness, and ease of use. The platform works well for both novice and expert newsletter creators.

Moosend email templates

I also love that you have the option of using HTML as well to create your newsletters.

When it comes to newsletter visuals, Moosend adds almost anything you want. From CTA buttons to countdown timers, videos, images, Gifs, etc.

Not only that but the image picker integrates with Stock photos, Instagram, and GIPHY among others.

Oh! There’s more! You can save your templates to use later so your contacts can easily identify your brand style.

Now, let’s look at ConvertKit.

The difference is like heaven and earth.

When I got to the email templates, I thought I was missing something. Or I had overlooked some button. But, nope! That’s all they had 3 templates.

ConvertKit templates

And they aren’t shiny or sleek like in MailChimp, ActiveCampaign, or Mailerlite. No! They decided to go with simply plain.

I know we all feel a bit lazy at times too and bloggers may not need any pomp and color. But, they could use some action in this section.

On the brighter side, you can custom your template. We’re all HTML and CSS geniuses. Plus add the Variables and make the templates dynamic. Good job ConvertKit.

Winner: Moosend. It’s like comparing Disney World to your Local Park. Without CSS, you can’t do much on ConvertKit in terms of customization and design.

Automation builder

In terms of automation, Moosend decided to go all out.

First, I love that they have ‘Recipes’ or tested and tried ready-made workflow automation for you to customize and get moving. They have 18 different workflows.

You can easily automate your onboarding, lead scoring, cart abandonment, anniversaries, etc. very similar to Ontraport.

Moosend automation workflows

And if you want to go hard and create your own automation, you can do it from scratch. You can add triggers based on weather conditions, time intervals, email opens, product views, if/else filter, etc.

Then pick the actions to be triggered from subscribing to a list to ping me, trigger automation, unsubscribe, send an email campaign, etc.

Automation

The drag and drop automation visual builder helps you seamlessly create an automation sequence of your choice. Basically, the world is your oyster.

ConvertKit also puts it’s the best foot forward.

It goes head-to-head with ActiveCampaign.

I was taken by surprise. They have a visual workflow builder that has put them on the map. And guess what? It’s not as sluggish as ActiveCampaign!

ConvertKit automation

It has a ‘rules builder’ that has a set of triggers and actions for you to start your automation sequence.

I love that they have an email composer on the right side so you don’t need to go back and forth when creating a sequence. You do everything inline.

Well, it doesn’t have the raw power of Drip or ActiveCampaign when it comes to customization and flexibility but it’s handy.

Winner: Moosend. It gives you different workflow recipes and you don’t have to do everything from scratch. And it has more flexibility in terms of customization than ConvertKit.

A/B testing

With Moosend, you can test your subject line, sender, sending time, and content.

Create the split test using HTML or the campaign editor.

Create two variants of your email, select a portion of your contacts, and run tests on the same ratios. The winning email (based on opens or clicks) is sent to the bulk of your contacts.

AB split testing

You’ll be able to test both one-off broadcasts and drip-feed series. But you can’t split test your landing pages and no multivariate testing.

ConvertKit is a bit of a disappointment when it comes to split testing.

The process is similar to Moosend’s only that the winning email is based on the number of opens.

Subject line split testing

You can only do it to the subject line of your emails and only on one-off emails. No landing page A/B testing either.

This makes it a deal-breaker as people like testing more than just the subject.

Winner: Moosend. You’ll want to test all components of your email to know what works and what doesn’t. If you heavily rely on split testing, ConvertKit won’t work for you.

eCommerce CRM

Moosend has a dedicated eCommerce AI to increase your conversions and sales. This feature makes it a good option for anyone running an online store.

It comes with abandoned cart emails, reminders, and product recommendations, ensuring you keep re-engaging your contacts and turning one-off customers to repeat clients.

You have personalized and hyper-targeted emails at your fingertips.

They also have product blocks that help you send shoppable emails to your lists. It allows you to create a mini-store in your emails as you not only display the products but have a description of the product features.

As if that’s not enough, they have a ‘Refine’ tool. It is dedicated to suggesting email subject lines based on the current industry standards. Impressive, right?

And you can integrate Moosend with WooCommerce, Salesforce, and other CRM platforms to further increase personalization.

With ConvertKit, I have nothing to report. Well, on second thought, it integrates with Shopify.

Winner: Moosend. Hands down! The eCommerce AI is on another level. It’s not Klaviyo or Ontraport but it’s way up there.

Forms and landing pages

Moosend comes with a handful of landing page templates and a powerful drag and drop landing page builder. The pages are mobile responsive, easy to customize, and they’re SSL enabled.

Moosend forms

I love that you have a wide range of customization options for the landing pages to fit your brand.

Are you afraid of malicious bot traffic on your landing pages? Well, Moosend thought of this and created inbuilt anti-bot protection. Relax, you’re covered.

The forms, on the other hand, come with a wide range of templates for you to choose your pick. You can create inline forms, floating boxes, floating bars, and full-page forms. So you can create your popup forms at ease.

Popups

I also loved that you can opt to create forms from scratch as well.

On to ConvertKit.

I was lost at first because they have both forms and landing pages under the ‘Forms’ tab. When you get there, you choose if you’re going for forms or landing pages.

I encourage you to integrate Instapages or Thrive Leads(review) for your peace of mind. You’ll thank me later.

On the landing page front, ConvertKit options are limited. You have to make CSS your friend to succeed in design and customization.

The forms are much better. ConvertKit understands the importance of having different types of forms. So you can create inline, modal, slide-in, or sticky bars. It makes it easy to create your popup forms.

ConvertKit templates

But I had to scratch my head when it got to customization. Again, you can’t do it without CSS. Basically, it was a bummer.

Winner: Moosend. The template options and responsive drag and drop builder makes ConvertKit look bad. Plus, the freedom to either create from scratch or customize the pre-made templates.

Reporting

Again, I was surprised by Moosend’s real-time reporting and analytics. Their reporting ensures you make informed decisions on your campaigns and better understand your audience.

Whenever your contacts subscribe, open, click, or make any move along your sales funnel, you’ll immediately see the move. I liked that the reports are easy to manage and read.

Moosend reports

The reporting tab allows you to track CTRs, opens, bounce rates, among others. And guess what? There is a heatmap on each sent email. So you know their exact location and position on the sales funnel.

ConvertKit, won’t really dig into the details of your campaign.

It gives you a bird’s eye view of what’s going on. So you get to see the subscribes, unsubscribes, conversions, top clicked links, and page visitors. However, I like the simplicity of the reports.

ConvertKit reports

You’ll also see the email opens and clicks. And they have a ‘resend to unopen’ buttons so that’s a plus.

Winner: Moosend. It provides you with more in-depth reporting to better understand your audience. But if you don’t want to geek over numbers, ConvertKit simplicity is a win.

Deliverability

We can’t call it email marketing if your contacts don’t receive your emails in the first place.

I like that Moosend allows you to use SPF and DKIM verifications to increase deliverability. Also, you can run content spam against popular spam filters to make sure your email doesn’t land in the spam folder.

ConvertKit runs a tight ship when it comes to vetting the people to use their products. Their limitation makes them have pretty decent deliverability.

Also, the fact that they enforce plain text emails rather than over-the-top newsletter templates keeps their emails from landing in the promotional or spam folders.

And they also allow SPF and DKIM verifications further increasing their deliverability.

Winner: Tie. They both have great measures in place that ensure emails don’t end up in your contacts spam.

Integrations

One of the most important aspects of email marketing software is integrations.

I will say I was surprised to see Moosend has a shortlist when it comes to integrations. The bummer, they don’t natively integrate with Shopify, compared to MailChimp which comes at the same price, it’s a disappointment.

On a brighter note, they natively integrate with WooCommerce, Magento, Facebook Lead Ads, and Salesforce. And Zapier and PieSync are present to connect you to hundreds of apps including Shopify.

ConvertKit also doesn’t have a long list but considering it’s like five years in the game, they’ve got a surprisingly extensive list.

They are few but quality integrations. You can basically carry out lead generation, eCommerce, lead scoring, and CRM functions with native integrations. And the fact that they natively integrate with Shopify, ClickFunnels, and Facebook Lead Ads is a win.

Plus, Zapier is there to save the day! You can add hundreds of integrations.

Winner: Tie. They both don’t have an extensive list of integrations, but thanks to Zapier, you can be hooked up to 2000+ apps.

Support

Moosend shines in support. They have quite a responsive live chat, email, and phone support. The free plan comes with a live chat option. And all the paid plans come with a dedicated account manager. How smooth is that?

Plus they have some documentation and video tutorials.

While most features on ConvertKit have been subjective, support is SUPER amazing.

From the super-cool welcome video to numerous articles, responsive emails, business hours live chat options, community support especially Facebook and Slack. I guarantee you won’t have any technical headaches.

Winner: ConvertKit. They have high-quality support that’s responsive with a wide range of support options to choose from.

Pricing

I have to say Moosend’s pricing is surprisingly affordable for the functionality and flexibility you get. It’s free for up to 1000 subscribers and the free platform has all the core features including reporting and analytics.

And then they have the coolest thing ever! A pay-as-you-go plan. Here, you buy credits, use them for as long as you like till they run out. For a seasonal email marketer, this is a big deal.

Anyway, they have three plans, Free, Pro, and Enterprise.

Moosend pricing

ConvertKit is a bit on the higher side.

Well, they have a free plan for under 1000 subscribers. Then you start paying up. And you start at $29 per month.

ConvertKit pricing

Well, it doesn’t duplicate subscribers like dear old MailChimp and Aweber. And you get a free migration system to easily import all your previous contacts, automations, forms, lists, etc. It makes it stand out.

I didn’t like the fact that I had to calculate the amount myself. So, for 3k subscribers, you dish out $69, 5K subscribers $79, 10K – $119 per month.

In my honest opinion, creators and bloggers on a budget are better off with MailChimp or Drip. You get value for money, and they both have free plans.

Winner: Moosend. It’s way cheaper and there is value for money. And the flexibility given by the pay-as-you-go plan gives it a competitive advantage.

Conclusion

Okay, the showdown is over.

Moosend is perfect if you’re running an eCommerce and looking for an affordable and flexible autoresponder with advanced automation and eCommerce capabilities.

Also if you need dynamic newsletter templates or landing pages, Moosend is the perfect solution for you.

ConvertKit, on the other hand, is great for bloggers, vloggers, content, and course creators. If all you need is to send emails, build an email list, and create advanced automation workflows, It’s a win. You get a fluid interface that you don’t have to worry about any technical hitches.

And you have to have a budget to go with it.

All in all, Moosend and ConvertKit have free plans. Have a go and get the look and feel of the platforms before you commit any cash to either.

What’s it going to be?
